En 1830, Ecuador se constituye como repblica independiente. Su importancia no slo radica en su carcter inaugural, sino sobre todo en haber sintetizado casi todos los temas que han tenido la historia ideolgica interna del romanticismo hispanoamericano: el espritu como expresin extrema de la sensibilidad, la recuperacin del pasado en el tratamiento del problema indgena y la confluencia de razas, la categora existencial y poltica que desarrolla el conflicto de la identidad nacional, la oposicin sistemtica, que pretende ser esclarecida, entre providencia y destino, carne y espritu, etnocentrismo y periferia, libertad y responsabilidad, armona y caos, pasin y voluntad.
