Son statut, il le doit un parcours exceptionnel qui dbute lorsque Hubert BeuveMry, directeur du Monde, lui confie les affaires du Proche et du MoyenOrient. En 1963, il est invit par Gamal Abdel Nasser linterviewer au Caire. Il nest pas dupe de la manuvre. Si Nasser est pass par lui, lui le jeune Juif arabophone expuls dgypte en 1951, peu avant le coup dtat des officiers libres , cest pour renouer avec la France de De Gaulle, qui na plus de relations diplomatiques avec Le Caire. Cet entretien exclusif, dont le scoop fait aussitt le tour du monde, va le propulser au cur des conflits de la rgion deux dcennies durant. Alternant ses correspondances entre Le Caire et Jrusalem, le journaliste fut un tmoin majeur des guerres de 67 et de 73, dont il raconte les coulisses. Il en rencontra tous les acteurs : Nasser, Levi Eshkol, Moshe Dayan, Golda Meir, Yasser Arafat, Ariel Sharon, Anouar elSadate, etc., dont il donne des portraits saisissants. Plus que des mmoires, son livre constitue une histoire, vcue de lintrieur, du conflit isralopalestinien.Quand il commence collaborer la rdaction du Monde, en 1955, g d peine trente ans, il est un jeune journaliste juif qui a t expuls dgypte, son pays natal, quelques annes plus tt. Dobdience marxiste, il stait fait remarquer, en publiant notamment une interview dHassan elBanna en 1949, avant que le fondateur des Frres musulmans ne soit assassin. Aprs 1983, ric Rouleau dbute une carrire dambassadeur. Il a collabor de nombreuses publications europennes et amricaines et a t membre du Council on Foreign Relations de New York.
