Sam Halpern's Darkness and Hope describes lovingly and mournfully the variety of Galician shtetl life that exists no more. The horrors of forced labor, the public humiliations, the creation of the ghetto of Chorostkow, and all the bans and laws instituted by the Nazis are graphically described. In a forcedlabor camp, Sam beat near starvation as well as typhus. In a stroke of good fortune, Sam and his brother Arie escaped and were hidden by old family friends until liberation, when Sam and Arie picked up the threads of their lives. After darkness of all they endured, Sam and his wife Gladys, full of hope, raised a family and became very involved in the future of the international Jewish community.
