Bei der Analyse der zahlreichen Verffentlichungen zu diesem Thema wird schnell erkennbar, dass es an Konkretisierungsversuchen fr diesen Begriff nicht mangelt. Eine mittlerweile mehr als zwanzig Jahre andauernde, intensiv gefhrte wissenschaftliche und politische Diskussion hat allerdings bislang noch nicht zu einem Konsens ber ein einheitliches Begriffsverstndnis von Nachhaltigkeit bzw. nachhaltiger Entwicklung1 gefhrt (vgl. Walz/Kuhlmann 2005, S. 279; Klemmer/Lehr/Lbbe 1999, S. 29f.). Darber hinaus ist noch weitestgehend unklar, wie Nachhaltigkeit zu bewerten ist und welche konkreten Schritte notwendig sind, um die Gesellschaft auf einen nachhaltigen Entwicklungspfad zu bewegen (vgl. Coenen/Grunwald 2003, S. 37). Die Ursache, weshalb sich nachhaltige Entwicklung trotz dieser konzeptionellen Unklarheiten als ein gesellschaftliches Leitbild etabliert hat, liegt in der generellen Zustimmungsfhigkeit. Darber hinaus besteht ein weitgehender Konsens darber, dass die Art und Weise der menschlichen Bedrfnisbefriedigung gegenwrtig als nicht nachhaltig bezeichnet werden muss (vgl. Coenen/Grunwald 2003, S. 56; Belz 2002, S. 18; Klemmer/Lehr/Lbbe 1999, S. 29f.). Trotz dieser zweifellos beeindruckenden Karriere eines Begriffs flieen die Grundannahmen der Nachhaltigkeit jedoch nicht selbstverstndlich und reibungslos in wirtschaftliches, umweltrelevantes und soziales Handeln ein. Es mangelt ganz offensichtlich an tragfhigen Brckenschlgen zwischen Zielvorgaben, Umsetzungskonzepten und den vorhandenen Innovationspotenzialen in den relevanten Handlungsfeldern" (Linne/Schwarz 2003, S. 13).
