Kant definiert das Ding als das Andere des Denkens, etwas vom denkenden Subjekt unabhngiges: 'Indem I.Kant das D. nicht in seiner Unabhngigkeit von anderen 'Dingen', sondern seiner Unabhngigkeit vom wahrnehmenden u. erkennenden Menschen untersuchte, kam er zu dem Gegensatz von Ding an sich und Erscheinung'. Beide Seiten an dem Ding sind jedoch von erheblicher Bedeutung: sowohl seine Unabhngigkeit vom denkenden Subjekt als auch sein Getrenntsein von anderen Dingen. Es wird zunchst untersucht, was Kant durch seine einseitige Betrachtung des Dings nur als des vom erkennenden Subjekt Unabhngigen gewinnt, und was er dadurch an mglicher spekulativer Erkenntnis preisgibt. Es folgt die Auseinandersetzung mit dem Ding und seinen Eigenschaften in Hegels Phnomenologie des Geistes. Hier tritt das erkennende Subjekt in den Hintergrund und die Unabhngigkeit der Dinge voneinander gewinnt wieder an Bedeutung, wobei sich das Ding als widersprchlich im Widerspruch mit seinen Eigenschaften erweist. Das Ziel der Untersuchung, die mit der Bestimmung des Dings in Hegels Wissenschaft der Logik fortgefhrt wird, ist 1) Ein Beweis der Existenz der vom denkenden Subjekt unabhngigen extramentalen Dinge eine verbindliche Widerlegung des Erkenntnisrelativismus (ob Skeptizismus, Solipsismus oder die Dinge nur denkende nicht erkennende rationalistische Gedankenspielerei)und 2) Ein Beweis der Erkennbarkeit der Dinge durch das denkende Subjekt.
