Whrend die wirtschaftliche Entwicklung im Dreieck MailandTurinGenua in den 1950er und 60er Jahren nach fordistischem Muster verlief, schienen hier andere Gesetze zu gelten: Das Wachstum konzentrierte sich erstaunlicherweise auf eher traditionelle Sektoren wie die Textil, Schuh oder Mbelherstellung, und statt groer, vertikal integrierter Konzerne prgten vor allem kleine Familienbetriebe das Geschehen. In den 1970er Jahren entstand die Bezeichnung Drittes Italien", welche die zentralen und nordstlichen Verwaltungsregionen im Rahmen der wirtschaftsstrukturellen Gliederung Italiens als eigenen Raum in Abgrenzung zu Nordwesten und Mezzogiorno definiert. Seitdem wuchs das Interesse an der Region merklich und anhaltend gute Wirtschaftsdaten waren die Grundlage fr die Entstehung eines Mythos, der das Modell Drittes Italien als europische Antwort auf die Globalisierung sah und es zum Paradigma regionaler Wirtschaftsfrderung erhob. Doch seit einigen Jahren treten nun auch hier krisenhafte Entwicklungen zutage, die das mitunter sehr positive Bild dieses Wirtschaftsraumes angreifen. Es finden Produktionsverlagerungen in Niedriglohnlnder statt, einst unabhngige Kleinbetriebe werden von integrierten Grounternehmen aufgekauft und asiatische Produzenten, die vom Label made in Italy" profitieren wollen, machen den alteingesessenen Betrieben vor der eigenen Haustr Konkurrenz. Gleichsam als Gegenreaktion auf die einstige Verklrung beschwren Autoren wie HADJIMICHALIS (2006) oder BIANCHI (1998) bereits das Ende des Dritten Italien herauf.
