Dabei sprechen der Wunderbericht Thietmar von Merseburgs, die allgemeine Entstehungsursache der Monumentalskulptur und einige Reliquiendepositorien in ottonischen Kruzifixen fr eine einstige Reliquienaufbewahrung im Gerokreuz. Dagegen sprechen jedoch die Ergebnisse der Restauration, die Einschtzung eines Restaurators und Handwerkers und die Entstehung von Groskulpturen. Im Fazit wird dann eine Schlussfolgerung bezglich der Ursache der Rckenaushhlung gezogen. Einleitung: ber kaum einen mittelalterlichen Kruzifixus gibt es eine so umfangreiche Literatur wie ber das Grokruzifix Gerokreuz, das sich im Klner Dom befindet. Allerdings weisen die unterschiedlichen Publikationen der dendrochronologischen Untersuchungsergebnisse, der Restaurationsbefunde sowie die der Kunsthistoriker sowohl ungeklrte Fragen, wie zum Beispiel Herkunft und Name des Bildhauers, als auch zahlreiche Uneinigkeiten untereinander auf. So variieren die Angaben etwa bezglich des genauen Entstehungszeitpunktes, der Vorbilder sowie des einstigen Standortes. Insbesondere ber den Zweck der Rckenaushhlung des gekreuzigten Jesus finden sich verschiedene Erklrungsversuche. Im Folgenden mchte ich im Anschluss an die Beschreibung des Gerokreuzes diese differierenden Aussagen gegenberstellen und argumentativ eine Schlussfolgerung ziehen. [...]
