Doch das Komische ist relativ es findet sich zwar zu allen Zeiten in der Kunst, nicht immer wird jedoch in gleicher Weise daruber gelacht. In der Renaissance etwa befurworteten die Kunsttheoretiker dann eine komische Bildwirkung, wenn die Figuren anregen, mit ihnen zu lachen. In vielen Kunstwerken werden diese jedoch eher der Lacherlichkeit preisgegeben. Ob sie den Betrachter zum Mitlachen oder Belachen einladen, Momente der Komik durchziehen alle Epochen der Kunstgeschichte, selbst die Kunstwissenschaft und Denkmalpflege entbehren nicht des unfreiwillig Komischen. Bei der Fulle an Motiven uberrascht es, dass sich die Kunstwissenschaft bislang wenig damit befasst hat. Erstmals wird in diesem Band an Beispielen von der Fruhen Neuzeit bis zur Gegenwart erortert, welchen Konditionen das Komische in der Kunst zu verdanken ist. Ausgehend vom neuen Bilddenken der Renaissance, das sich dieser menschlichen Regung offnete, spuren die Autorinnen und Autoren das Komische u.a. in der niederlandischen Malerei des Goldenen Zeitalters, der Genremalerei des 19. Jahrhunderts, aber auch in Paradoxen der jungsten Moderne auf. Dem Leser bietet sich dabei ein ebenso erhellender wie amusanter Uberblick uber die europaische Kunstgeschichte.
