Es waren die griechischen Sophisten, die Zweifel aufbrachten, ob sich das moralische Verhalten fr den Einzelnen auch wirklich lohne. Sie lehrten die Standards der Moral als eine Konvention zu verstehen, die auch anders ausfallen knnte. Aus dem Verlangen nach einer Begrndung wurde nun festgestellt, dass das Wort gut" in diesem Zusammenhang mehrere Bedeutungen haben kann. Es kann z. B. fr die Einzelnen das Ntzliche bedeuten, fr eine soziale Gemeinschaft aber ein Tugendhaftes. Mit dieser Unterscheidung standen die griechischen Denker direkt vor dem Problem, ob das Gerechte berhaupt das Ntzliche sei, ob das gute Leben notwendigerweise ein gerechtes Leben bzw. das Gerechte notwendigerweise ein gutes Leben sei, ob es denn berhaupt gut sei, sich den sozialen Regeln einer bestimmten Moral zu unterwerfen und ob sich die Moral fr das Glcksstreben des Einzelnen berhaupt lohne. Mit diesen Fragestellungen zwischen dem guten und gerechten Leben, zwischen Glck und Moral begann also ein bis heute andauerndes Verhngnis der Philosophie in ihrer kritischen Reflexion ber die Grundlage der Moral einerseits und in der begrifflichen Begrndung zwischen Glck und Moral andererseits. Die moderne Ethik seit Kant hat sich weitgehend damit begngt, Bedingungen eines guten Lebens zu markieren, die fr alle geschaffen und von allen respektiert werden sollten.
