Das vorliegende Buch unternimmt weder eine transhistorische Rekonstruktion semiotischer Theoreme noch den Versuch ihrer Aktualisierung. Vielmehr will es den paradigmatischen Status von Lessings ''Laokoon'' fr eine Diskursgeschichte des Zeichens im 18. Jahrhundert herausarbeiten. Obgleich Lessing selbst es dezidiert ablehnt, von nichtknstlerischen Zeichenpraktiken zu handeln, sind seine Reflexionen nicht auf das Gebiet der Knste zu beschrnken. Intuition, Illusion, Evidenz oder das ''bequeme Verhltnis'' von Bezeichnendem und Bezeichnetem sind vielmehr Effekte, die auch von Wissenschaften und sozialen Praktiken angestrebt werden. Da es im ''Laokoon'' nicht nur um die semiotischen Qualitten und konomien von Bild und Text, um das Nebeneinander und Nacheinander der Zeichen geht, sondern auch um die Geschwindigkeit, Steuerung und Optimierung von Zeichenprozessen, hat Lessings Text Indiziencharakter fr fundamentale Problemstellungen, die etwa auch in den Bereichen von Regierungsknsten und Logik nach Lsungen verlangen. Gerade eine Lektre des ''Laokoon'', die ''in dem, was gesagt worden ist, keinen Rest und keinen berschu, sondern nur das Faktum seines historischen Erscheinens voraussetzt'', erlaubt Analysen, die ein LaokoonParadigma in seinen historischen Schichten freilegen: seine Mglichkeitsbedingungen, seine konkrete Entfaltung und seine Transformation im Feld der ''Anthropologie''.
