Seit knapp zwei Jahren leistet eine Gruppe von Linguisten am Institut fr Spramwissensmaft der Universitt zu Kln Forsmungsarbeit auf dem Ge biete der sprachlimen Universalien. Dieses Universalienprojekt knpft an die Arbeiten einer schon lnger bestehenden Gruppe an der Stanford Uni versity in Kalifornien an, deren spiritus rector, Joseph H. Greenberg in einer hier noch fters zu erwhnenden Publikation, 'Some Universals of Gram mar' (Greenberg 1963), die fr die ganze weitere Forschung sehr wiChtigen Prinzipien der sogenannten implikativen Generalisierungen formuliert hat. Im Unterschied zu dem Stanforder Unternehmen, das mit einer relativ gro en Zahl von Sprachen umgeht (80100) und sich in smnellem berblick vor allem fr die Gemeinsamkeiten interessiert, arbeitet die Klner Gruppe zu nchst mit einer kleinen, erst allmhlich zunehmenden Zahl von Spramen, und es geht uns dabei um die smwierigere Aufgabe, gerade fr das von Sprache zu Sprame Versmiedene, also fr die Variation, gemeinsame zu grunde liegende Prinzipien zu finden. Wir lassen uns von einer organisierenden Hypothese leiten, die im im fol genden kurz explizieren und durm Beispielflle vordemonstrieren will. Im mchte betonen, da im, um verstndlich mamen zu knnen, was wir wollen und wonam wir sumen, bei dem gegenwrtigen Stand der Forsmung nom sehr stark auf diese Demonstrationen und damit auf Ihr intuitives Mitver stndnis angewiesen bin.
