Untersuchungsgegenstand waren die gesellschaftlichen Trgergruppen von Imperialismus und Nationalismus, oder genauer: Die Trgergruppen, die sich in der Hochphase des Imperialismus in den nationalen Verbnden' eine organisatorische Form gaben. Diese nationalen Verbnde sollen auch in der folgenden Arbeit im Zentrum des Interesses stehen. Hierbei handelt es sich zunchst um ein europisches Phnomen: Im Referat wurde versucht, dem Rechnung zu tragen, indem die diesbezglichen Entwicklungen im Deutschen Kaiserreich und in Grobritannien umrissen wurden. Gerade aus dieser komparativen Perspektive heraus fiel bereits bei der Lektre zum Referat eine Besonderheit der Entwicklung in Deutschland auf: Den nationalen Verbnden im Kaiserreich wird in der gesamten Literatur zum Thema ein besonderes, politisches wie gesellschaftliches Durchsetzungsvermgen attestiert. So weist HansUlrich Wehler darauf hin, da die Alldeutschen', d.h. die Mitglieder des radikalsten Exponenten des nationalen Verbandswesens, noch in den 1890er Jahren bei Konservativen als Stammtischpolitiker' galten vor dem Weltkrieg jedoch wichtige Berater und Vermittungsfunktionen' wahrnehmen.
