Der gebrtige Dne und sptere USAmerikaner entwickelte die Phasentheorie Sigmund Freuds um die psychosozialen Aspekte und die Entwicklungsphasen des Erwachsenenalters weiter. Er geht davon aus, dass der Mensch im Laufe seines Lebens acht Entwicklungsphasen durchluft, die in einem inneren Entwicklungsplan angelegt sind. Auf jeder Stufe ist die Lsung der relevanten Krise in Form der Integration von gegenstzlichen Polen, welche die Entwicklungsaufgaben darstellen, erforderlich, deren erfolgreiche Bearbeitung wiederum fr die folgenden Phasen von Bedeutung ist. Die Krise ist bei Erikson kein negativ geprgter Begriff, sondern ein Zustand, der konstruktiv gelst zu einer Weiterentwicklung fhrt und die Lsungen dieser integriert und in das eigene Selbstbild aufgenommen. Die menschliche Entwicklung ist somit ein Prozess, der zwischen Stufen, Krisen und dem neuen Gleichgewicht wechselt, um immer reifere Stadien zu erreichen. Ausfhrlich untersuchte Erikson die Mglichkeiten der Weiterentwicklung des Individuums und die affektiven Krfte, die es handeln lassen. Besonders deutlich werden sie an den acht psychosozialen Phasen, die nun im Zentrum dieser Abhandlung stehen sollen. Sie veranschaulichen, dass Erikson Entwicklung vor allem als eins betrachtet hat: als lebenslangen Prozess.
