Seit dem Ende des Kalten Krieges spielt dabei die Idee, dass eine durch den Westen nachdrcklich gefrderte Demokratisierung weltweit zu mehr Frieden fhren wrde, eine zunehmend wichtige Rolle. Dieser Gedanke beruht auf der weit verbreiteten These, dass Demokratien (fast) keine Kriege gegeneinander fhren. Im Fokus dieser Arbeit steht die Frage, warum Demokratien eher als andere politische Systeme in der Lage sind Kooperationsprobleme zu berwinden und untereinander stabile Friedensordnungen ausbilden, die dem kantischen Ideal des Friedensbundes' (foedus pacificum)1 nahe kommen. Wie kann der demokratische Frieden trotz unfriedlicher Demokratien erklrt werden? Zwei Erklrungsversuche sollen auf ihre Stichhaltigkeit untersucht werden: der normativkulturelle Ansatz und der strukturellinstitutionalistische Ansatz. Ich werde zeigen, dass obwohl beide Erklrungsversuche empirisch belegt werden knnen, der normativkulturelle Ansatz in Verbindung mit sozialkonstruktivistischen Elementen das selektive Auenverhalten von Demokratien am besten erklren kann. Die vorliegende Arbeit geht in fnf Schritten vor: Zunchst ist es notwendig den Friedensbegriff nher zu erlutern, um die anschlieend dargelegten empirischen Befunde zum Verhltnis von Demokratie und Frieden bewerten zu knnen. Im zweiten Teil werde ich beide theoretischen Anstze erlutern, um sie anschlieend auf ihr Erklrungspotential hin zu prfen.
