Das Denken des englischen Theologen und Philosophen Wilhelm von Ockham (ca. 12851347) wird herkmmlicherweise als ein Denken der uneingeschrnkten Allmacht Gottes dargestellt. Die Lehre von der Allmacht Gottes bedeutet nach Ockham wie auch nach den meisten mittelalterlichen und neuzeitlichen Theologen und Philosophen allerdings nicht, da Gottes Macht schlechthin grenzenlos wre. Sie besagt nur, da Gott all das tun kann, was keinen logischen Widerspruch enthlt. Die Grenze der gttlichen Allmacht und nach Ockham ist es ihre einzige Grenze bildet also das Kontradiktionsprinzip. Diese Grenze hebt die Allmacht nicht auf, weil sie sie nicht real einschrnkt, sondern sie schafft im Gegenteil die Voraussetzung, um die Allmacht berhaupt sinnvoll denken zu knnen.
