Der nationalsozialistische Volksgerichtshof ist allein schon wegen der immens grossen Zahl seiner Todesurteile (ca. 5200) ein justizgeschichtliches Phanomen von sakularer Bedeutung. Sie beruht auf einer Erhebung aller erhalten gebliebenen Akten, die Verfahren des Volksgerichtshofs dokumentieren. Dadurch ist es erstmals moglich, quantitativ verlassliche Angaben uber die von der Volksgerichtshofsjustiz Betroffenen, z.B. uber deren Nationalitat und Zugehorigkeit zu Widerstandsgruppen, aber auch uber die Beteiligung der Gesellschaft an dieser Justiz zu machen. Die Ergebnisse notigen zu einer Uberprufung gangiger Vorstellungen. Die vom Volksgerichtshof ausgeubte brutale Strafgewalt hing nicht allein von der politischen Machtspitze ab, sondern ruhte auf einer breiten Grundlage.
