Bisher betrachtete die Kunstgeschichte Ratgeb vor allem unter dem biografischen Aspekt. Besonders faszinierten seine Verstrickung in den Bauernkrieg und sein schrecklicher Tod. Doch der Blick auf die Knstlerpersnlichkeit" verstellte den Blick auf das Werk. Hier hingegen wird der Fokus auf das Oeuvre gelegt, insbesondere auf das Verhltnis von Text und Bild sowie die Untersuchung der Inschriften und ihrer Funktionen. Es wird gezeigt, dass die Inschriften die Gemlde nicht einfach begleiten, sondern die Interpretation des Betrachters lenken und seine Wahrnehmung ndern.
