TEXT IN DUTCHIn 1836 is een geologische kartering uitgevoerd van de 57 gemeenten in de provincie Groningen. De resultaten van deze kartering op schaal 1 : 50.000 zijn bewaard gebleven. Een Geologische kaart van Groningen kwam in 1837 gereed twintig jaar voordat Staringhs geologische kaart van Nederland verscheen. Het is ook een monumentenkaart waarop de ligging en hoogte van 120 wierden in Groningen voorkomen. Waterafvoer en de grenzen van de zijlvestenijen zijn andere thema's die op de kaart aandacht krijgen.Ook van eerdere geologische karteringen zijn kaarten bekend, zoals een geologische relifkaart van de provincie uit 1827. Alle kaarten worden in de atlas beschreven en afgebeeld. Een gevouwen exemplaar van de geologische kaart van 1837 op ware grootte is in de atlas opgenomen. Ter inleiding wordt beschreven hoe de kaart tot stand is gekomen. Daarnaast wordt aandacht besteed aan het wierdenonderzoek in het begin van de 19e eeuw en de verdere ontwikkeling van de geologische en bodemkartering in Nederland.De kaarten uit de periode 18251839 nemen een unieke plaats in binnen de geschiedenis van de geocartografie'. Ze behoren wereldwijd tot de vroegste bodemkaarten die we kennen.
