Hij maakt duidelijk waarom dit debat gekenmerkt wordt door sociale hypochondrie een overdreven angst voor het uiteenvallen van het sociaal lichaam 'samenleving'. In het integratiediscours is een wensbeeld van 'de samenleving' aanwezig, dat het cultureel afwijkende als 'buiten de samenleving' definieert. Dit wensbeeld doortrekt al het spreken over integratie, van de door Schinkel kritisch geanalyseerde integratiemarkt in de wetenschap tot het politieke spreken. Dat spreken kent zijn eigen censuur, die tegenwoordig bijvoorbeeld bestaat uit de kritiek op de politieke correctheid. Maar daarmee is simpelweg een nieuwe politieke correctheid geboren, die zich de retoriek van het 'multiculturealisme' aanmeet en voorbij alle multiculturalisme en politieke correctheid nu de dingen 'realistisch' bij de naam wil noemen. Schinkel maakt duidelijk dat al het spreken over integratie, van politiek 'links' tot 'rechts', de cruciale kenmerken van het integratiediscours overneemt. Alleen het belichten van de paradoxen binnen dat discours kan een kritische reflectie erop bevorderen.
