In this book Professor Westergaard offers an alternative to the purely syntactic analysis of deinite nominal phrase anaphora. She calls on the wellknown principle of functional sentence perspective, advanced by the Prague school of linguistics, to suggest a pragmatic approach to thecoreference options of pronouns and full nominal phrases. According to her analysis, the anaphora rule should itself be considered a pragmatic principle, which bascially ensures that a pronoun may not be more thematic than the full nominal phrase from which it picks up its reference.
