Desde hace ms de una dcada, los estudios de literatura y cultura espaolas en las universidades de los Estados Unidos vienen experimentando una creciente inestabilidad, a causa, en parte, de la crisis de las humanidades en general y del libro en particular. Pero el hispanismo arrastra tambin problemas propios, no resolubles con una mera adaptacin casi siempre tarda y en general mimtica a los paradigmas que van emergiendo en otras reas: feminismo, multiculturalismo, atlanticismo, estudios culturales, de la inmigracin, etc., y menos an con un regreso a la vieja tradicin filolgica, que apunta en los ncleos conservadores. La tesis central de este libro es que el declive de los estudios sobre Espaa y su escasa capacidad creadora resultan de su anclaje en una tradicin acadmica incapacitada congnitamente para actualizarse como paradigma epistmico. Un nuevo paradigma capaz de renovar el campo slo puede triunfar si es ms frtil su relacin con las realidades culturales de la Pennsula Ibrica, esto es, si cambia la actitud representacional de los hispanistas de manera que disminuya la distancia entre el objeto disiciplinar y el relato epistmico.
