Thucydides History of the Peloponnesian War and Platos Apology represent two influential works of classical Athens. Thucydides work is widely recognized as an argument for democratic thought. Platos work, an essential tract in western philosophy, is often accused of being antidemocratic. This book reconstructs a fundamental understanding of the conflict between the political thought and action of Socrates and Athens. It challenges prior commentary on three essential fronts. First, it explores the extent to which imperial ambition and competition subvert Athenian democracy. Second, it explores the extent to which Socrates labors oppose the ambition and competition inherent in Athenian imperialism. Finally, it explores the extent to which Socratic morality represents a threat to postrestoration Athenian ambition.

This book was a bit dense at times, but I appreciated the detailed analysis of the political climate surrounding Socrates' trial. It gave me a new perspective on his resistance to imperialism. Just a heads up, the delivery took longer than expected, but I'm glad I waited for it!

Thought-Provoking Read on Socrates
I picked up this book because I've always been fascinated by Socrates and his trial. The author does an amazing job exploring how resistance to imperialism played a role in Classical Athens. It's a heavy read but worth it if you're into philosophy and history. Would make a great gift for students!

Not What I Hoped For
I was really excited to read this book, but I found it confusing and hard to follow. The arguments about imperialism felt stretched and didn't capture my interest as I hoped. I think the topic is important, but the execution left much to be desired. Not the best experience for me.
