Internationale Konventionen sind institutionalisierte Bausteine zur Fortentwicklung der globalen Klima und Umweltpolitik. Deren Ratifikation durch teilnehmende Staaten ist daher Grundvoraussetzung, damit global einheitliche Zielvereinbarungen und dringend notwendige Handlungsstrategien national umgesetzt werden. Theoretisch wie empirisch ist der Verdacht aufgekommen, dass sich allen voran Staaten demokratischer Regierungsformen international rechtsverbindlich auf Verpflichtungen einlassen und diesem internationalen Commitment national nachkommen. Die vorliegende Studie untersucht diese Hypothese mittels quantitativ statistischer Methoden global vergleichend unter Bercksichtigung etwaiger intervenierender Variablen. Es wird gezeigt, dass das Konzept der Demokratie nicht eindimensional messbar ist. Auch das umweltpolitische Commitments kann nicht auf einen ideengeschichtlichen, wertorientierten Mechanismus reduziert werden.
