Franz Werfel traf 1926 mit seinen frheren Klassenkameraden Willy Haas und Ernst Deutsch zusammen das mag Inspirationsmoment fr diese Geschichte einer Jugendschuld gewesen sein. Die Erlebnisse von damals im Klassenzimmer, auf dem Tennisplatz, bei Gartenfesten, in Nachtcafs, bei spiritistischen Sancen wurden wach und suchten ihren Ausdruck. Vor allem aber die Auseinandersetzung mit dem Individuum. So entwickelte sich im Abituriententag aus Abenteuerlust, Freiheitsdrang und bermtiger Unart zunchst ein Krftemessen Ernst Sebastians, des Erzhlers, mit dem intellektuell frhreifen Klassenbesten Franz Adler; aber Eifersucht mischt sich hinein und Neid und lassen Sebastians und seiner Kameraden Sicherproben fr den psychisch und physisch immer unterlegeneren Adler zu Erniedrigung und Qual werden, um schlielich in ein immer strker ins Verbrecherische gleitendes Bekmpfen und Verfhren zu mnden. Ernst Sebastian mu sich jetzt bei einer assoziativen Konfrontation im Bewutsein seiner Jugendverfehlungen, vor allem seiner Schuld, selbst gestehen: Meine Aufgabe ist es, mich zu verhren.
