Far from being only a private affair, Paul addresses his letter to Philemon and the congregation in his house; in this volume, Muller proves that this constitutes the ongoing relevance of Paul's letter. Muller zeigt Paulus' grundlegend neue Weltsicht auf, die durch die Gemeinschaft mit Christus ermoglicht wird und die sich auf die Gemeinschaft der Glaubenden auswirkt. Die zentralen Begriffe des Briefes Glaube, Liebe, Gemeinschaft bleiben nicht im Unverbindlichen, sondern werden im Blick auf das Verhaltnis Philemons zu seinem Sklaven Onesimus konkret. Dass Paulus die Freilassung des Sklaven nicht explizit fordert, ist ihm vor allem in der neueren Auslegungsgeschichte oft vorgeworfen worden wie Muller zeigt jedoch zu Unrecht. Unter den Bedingungen der antiken Sklaverei und ihrer rechtlichen Bestimmungen war die Freilassung nicht immer die bessere Wahl. Vor allem aber erwartet Paulus mehr als rechtlich gefordert werden kann, namlich ein neues, gewandeltes Verhaltnis zwischen Sklave und Herr, das sich im Alltag auswirkt. Muller lenkt die Aufmerksamkeit darauf, dass die Frage nach dem Verhaltnis von Verschiedenen nicht als Privatangelegenheit, sondern als Angelegenheit der ganzen Gemeinde behandelt wird, was die bleibende Aktualitat des Philemonbriefs ausmacht.
