Die vorliegende Arbeit stellt die Wechselbezge von Individuum und Gesellschaft anhand dreier ausgewhlter USamerikanischer Romane des 20. Jahrhunderts dar: F. Scott Fitzgeralds The Great Gatsby (1925), J.D.Salingers The Catcher in the Rye (1951) und Bret Easton Ellis Less than Zero (1985). Der Verlust der Seinsgewissheit konstituiert den Protagonisten des (post)modernen Romans als Beobachter. Im 20. Jahrhundert durchluft die Beobachterfigur selbst eine Entwicklung; am Ende steht die Fragmentierung des Individuums. Die Arbeit gibt Einblick in die soziokulturellen Verhltnisse der (post) industriellen Gesellschaft und die darin verwobene Welterfahrung des Protagonisten.
