Dezember 1998, stieen der erste Prsident der Europischen Zentralbank (EZB), Wim Duisenberg, und die Finanzminister der gerade gegrndeten Whrungsunion in Brssel mit Champagner auf die neue europische Whrung an. Dieser Tag markierte einen Meilenstein in der Whrungsgeschichte. Whrungen aus 11 Lndern beendeten ihre Existenz. Der Euro trat an ihre Stelle. Zehn Jahre spter, im Jahre 2009, ist der Euro die gemeinsame offizielle Whrung in 22 europischen Staaten und im Alltag von rund 329 Millionen Brgern angekommen. Der Euro lste die nationalen Whrungen als Zahlungsmittel ab. "Schon bevor der Euro berhaupt das Licht der Welt erblickte, gab es Spekulationen ber seine Rolle als internationale Whrung. Dem USDollar schien hier ein "Rivale" zu erwachsen, und ber die rein wirtschaftlichen Aspekte hinaus wurde der Euro bereits von manchem als eine Art "Waffe" Europas gegenber der Weltmacht USA gesehen, deren Hegemoniestellung nicht selten gerade mit der dominanten Position der amerikanischen Whrung in Verbindung gebracht wurde." Trotz vieler Zweifel an der neuen Whrung, hat sich der Euro seinen Stellenwert in den internationalen Volkswirtschaften erkmpft und an Bedeutung gewonnen. Zwar spielt der USDollar weiterhin die Hauptrolle im Weltfinanz und Weltwhrungssystem. Doch hat sich der Euro als zweitwichtigste Whrung der Welt fest etabliert. Erstmals seit vielen Jahrzehnten wird daher ernsthaft darber debattiert, ob der USDollar auch knftig die internationale Whrung Nr. 1 bleiben wird. Die vorliegende Arbeit setzt sich insbesondere mit der Entwicklung des Euros auseinander, zeigt die entscheidenden Faktoren einer Leitwhrung und gibt einen Ausblick auf die Mglichkeit den USDollar als fhrende Whrung der Welt abzulsen.
