Angesichts der Tatsache, dass das Kino inzwischen als Massenmedium par excellence sein Publikum auf globaler Ebene gefunden hat und mit seiner komplexen Geschichte von Theorie und Praxis die populrste und damit wahrscheinlich auch wichtigste Kunst des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts darstellt, ist es mehr denn je notwendig, einzelne Filme, aber auch das "Phnomen Film" im allgemeinen "richtig" zu verstehen. Man knnte meinen, dass jeder halbwegs intelligente Mensch, der sich die Welt erklren kann, auch ihre Abbildung auf der Leinwand versteht. Diese Schlussfolgerung wre allerdings zu einfach. Gewhnlicherweise rezipieren wir Film in erster Linie unbewusst und wie von selbst ber die visuellauditive Wahrnehmung, die stark an Emotionen gekoppelt ist. Ein bewusstes Durchschauen filmischer Strukturen dagegen schliet einen intellektuellen Verstndnisprozess mit ein. Film ist nicht Realitt, sondern ein kreatives Konstrukt mit einer (mehr oder weniger ersichtlichen) erzhlenden Instanz, das einen starken Realittseindruck hinterlsst. "Gerade weil der Film leicht zu verstehen ist, ist er so schwer zu erklren", stellt Christian Metz in seiner "Semiologie des Films" ber das Paradoxe seines Objekts fest. Um "den Film" in aller Gnze zu erfassen, kann die Filmwissenschaft aus einer Vielfalt von Anstzen heraus schpfen. Dabei muss sie sich sowohl der praktischen sowie theoretischen Filmgeschichte (bzw. historischen "Filmothek" und Filmtheorie), aus der heraus sie berhaupt erst entstehen konnte, als auch anderer wissenschaftlicher Methoden "von auen" bedienen, um der Komplexitt des Objekts "Film" gerecht zu werden.
