Dabei gehen die Forscher' von verschiedenen Perspektiven aus. Bei der Suche nach einer universalen Filmsprache berufen sie sich meist auf technischen, soziologischen, philosophischen, psychologischen und sprachwissenschaftlichen Anstze. Zustzlich werden in diesem Bezug Kunsttheorien herangezogen. Die erste Entwicklungsphase des Kinos zeichnet sich durch flanierende theoretische Gedanken zur sthetik des Films aus. Die Frage nach einer Filmsprache wird noch nicht bewusst gestellt. Erst in den 20er Jahren des 20. Jahrhunderts fhren die russischen Formalisten den Begriff der Filmsprache' ein. Die wirkliche semiologische Beschftigung mit dem Filmmedium beginnt erst in den 60er Jahren. Sie basiert auf der Zeichen und Literaturwissenschaft bzw. auf der Semiologie. Die primre Aufgabe der Filmsemiotik besteht darin, eine umfassende und exakte Beschreibung der Signifikation im Film zu liefern. Dazu dienen die tradierten semiotischen Anstze als theoretische Grundlage. Als hervorstechende Vertreter der Filmsemiotik sind Roland Barthes, Christian Metz und Umberto Eco zu erwhnen. Die internationale semiotische Filmtheorie wird durch die berlegungen vom italienischen Schriftsteller und Regisseur Pier Paolo Pasolini mitgeprgt. In seinen Essays und theoretischen Schriften thematisiert er u. a. die Filmsprache in Anbetracht semiotischer und literarischer Ausdrucksmodi.
