Knig Aietes lsst seine Tochter und die Argonauten durch ein Heer unter der Fhrung seines Sohnes Apsyrtos verfolgen, doch knnen die Griechen erneut mit Medeas Hilfe entkommen. Nachdem die Argonauten nach Iolkos zurckgekehrt sind, rcht Medea Jason an seinem Onkel Knig Pelias, der seinen Neffen auf die gefhrliche Reise ins Kolcherland geschickt hatte, um ihm nicht die Herrschaft berlassen zu mssen. Wiederum fliehen die beiden, um der Vergeltung von Pelias' Verwandten fr seine Ermordung zu entgehen, und suchen bei Knig Kreon in Korinth Schutz. Um sich und seinen beiden Kindern aus der Ehe mit Medea endlich eine dauerhafte Bleibe zu verschaffen, will sich Jason mit Kreons Tochter Kreusa vermhlen. Medea aber soll verstoen werden. An diesem Punkt des griechischen Mythos setzt Senecas Tragdie Medea ein. Medea ist auer sich vor Wut und will sich an dem untreuen Gatten rchen. Von Knig Kreon, der sie sofort auer Landes weisen will, erwirkt sie einen Tag Aufschub, um angeblich ihre Kinder zu verabschieden. Medea aber scheinbar vershnt lsst der jungen Braut ein vergiftetes Gewand berreichen. Als Kreusa dieses anlegt, geht ihr Krper in Flammen auf.
