In den Jahren nach 1848 gestaltete der Bischof der griechischorientalische Diozese in Hermannstadt, Andrei von Saguna, eine grundlegende Reform und geistlichgeistige Erneuerung dieser Kirche. Bis heute beruft man sich auf ihn, um nationale Kategorien in der rumanischen Orthodoxie zu rechtfertigen. Diese Studie widerlegt solche einseitigeklektischen Missverstandnisse. Ihr Ziel ist es, in einem ganzheitlichen Ansatz das kirchliche Wirken Sagunas in den europaischen, geistesgeschichtlichen und theologischen Zusammenhangen der nachrevolutionaren Habsburgermonarchie verstehbar zu machen. Besonderes Augenmerk wird auf die biographischen Voraussetzungen seines Wirkens gelegt. Dabei weitet sich die Perspektive und nimmt die Situation der Aromunen, die Beziehungen zur ungarischen Regierung, zur serbischen Kirche in Karlowitz und zu den siebenburgischsachsischen Eliten in den Blick.
