Jahrhunderts, wie Poggius Florentinus (13801459) und Ludwig Vives (14921540), den Niedergang der Literatur" (Varga 1978, 87) reprsentierte und damit den Status einer berbrckungszeit" zwischen der hoch verehrten Antike einerseits und der Renaissance andererseits einnahm vielmehr erhielten die ersten fnf Jahrhunderte des Mittelalters den Beinamen finster", um die vermeintliche literarische Unproduktivitt und den schwarzen Fleck auf der historischen Zeitleiste in eine Metapher zu fassen. Einige Humanisten sahen sich in diesem Zusammenhang selbst als Vetreiber" dieser Finsternis (Varga 1978, 88). Erst schtzungsweise seit den letzten beiden Jahrhunderten geniet das Mittelalter und es soll im Folgenden ausnahmslos wertungsfrei als Begriff gebraucht werden durch das Zutun von Historikern wie August Potthast , Theodor E. Mommsen und Horst Fuhrmann wieder immer grer werdenden Respekt obgleich es auch im 20. Jahrhundert die Konnotation des Barbarentums" noch nicht vollends abgelegt zu haben scheint (Le Goff 1984, 11). Doch auch der unwrdige Begriff Dunkles Zeitalter verschwindet zusehends (Mommsen 1959, 107), und dies alles nicht zuletzt weil gerade das frhmittelalterliche Europa durchaus eine Vielzahl literarischer Meisterwerke hervorbrachte man denke nur an das in altenglischer Sprache verfasste epische Heldengedicht Beowulf.
