Es ist der Nachfolger des Monologion und baut in seiner Beweisfhrung auf die Erkenntnisse dieses ersten Werkes Anselms von Canterbury auf, worauf er auch selbst in der Vorrede des Proslogion hinweist. Es demonstriert das wissenschaftliche Programm der Theologie: fides quaerens intellectum, der Glaube sucht den notwendigen Beweisgrund. Das gesamte Werk beschftigt sich mit der Suche nach dem einen Argument, durch das die Existenz Gottes bewiesen werden soll... Anselms Gottesbeweis muss in Verbindung mit dem augustinischneuplatonischen Denken begriffen werden. Der Glaube ist nicht ohne das Verstehen, das Verstehen ist nicht ohne die Vernunft. Er wollte mit seinem Beweis weder sich selbst, noch seine Gegner von der Existenz Gottes berzeugen, [...] sondern er wollte lediglich die ihm auf Grund des Glaubens unerschtterlich feststehende Gewiheit, da Gott existiert, auch auf dem Weg des philosophischen Arguments erreichen, um deutlich zu machen, da zwischen Glauben und Erkennen kein Gegensatz besteht'. Dieses Vorhaben bedarf allerdings der Unabhngigkeit des philosophischen Beweises vom Gottesglauben. Anselm von Canterbury setzt in seiner Beweisfhrung jedoch solch einen Glauben voraus, um die Argumentation und somit auch Gott verstehen zu knnen...
