Trotz zahlreicher Beitrge ist man sich in vielen, auch grundlegenden Fragen zum Schelmenroman, seinen Vorbildern, Auswirkungen und sogar Gattungsmerkmalen nicht immer einig und schon die etymologische Begriffsbestimmung erweist sich als problematisch. In dieser Arbeit werden die Wrter Pikaro" und Schelm" sowie Schelmenroman" und Pikaroroman" analog verwendet. Die vorliegende Magisterarbeit hat eine zweifache Aufgabe. Erstens soll die Landesgrenzen berschreitende Entwicklung des Schelmenromans erforscht werden. Zweitens wird die Entwicklung untersucht, die der Schelmenroman innerhalb der letzten Jahrhunderte erfahren hat. Dabei soll versucht werden zu klren, inwieweit das Aufkommen dieser Gattung mit bestimmten gesellschaftlichen und historischen Konstellationen zusammenhngt und als Reaktion auf diese gefrdert wird. Am Beispiel Lazarillo de Tormes" soll der Schelmenroman auf die herausgearbeiteten Merkmale hin geprft und mit den verschiedenen Variationen des Pikarischen anhand der Novelle Rinconete und Cortadillo" in Zusammenhang gebracht werden. In einem daran anschlieenden Teil thematisiere ich den Aufbruch des Schelmenromans in Deutschland und stelle ihn in einen Kontext zur zeitgenssischen gesellschaftlichen und geschichtlichen Situation. Die Differenzen und die Affinitten zum spanischen Schelmenroman sollen anhand von Simplicissimus" dargestellt werden. Als bergang zum nchsten Kapitel wird die Rezeption und die Wirkungsgeschichte des Schelmenromans in Deutschland bis in die Gegenwart dienen.
