HansUlrich Treichels Erzählung handelt von einer Familie, an deren Leben nichts außergewöhnlich scheint: Der Flucht aus den Ostgebieten im letzten Kriegsjahr folgt der erfolgreiche Aufbau einer neuen Existenz in den Zeiten des Wirtschaftswunders. Doch es gibt für sie nur ein einziges, alles beherrschendes Thema: die Suche nach dem auf dem Treck verlorengegangenen Erstgeborenen, nach Arnold. Arnold ist nicht tot. Er ist auch nicht verhungert. Das erfährt der kleine Bruder und IchErzähler eines Tages von seinen Eltern: Jetzt begann ich zu begreifen, daß Arnold, der untote Bruder, die Hauptrolle in der Familie spielte und mir die Nebenrolle zugewiesen hatte. In der Vorstellung des Jungen wird das, was der Eltern größter Wunsch ist, zum Alptraum: daß der Verlorene gefunden wird. Lakonischdistanziert und zugleich ungemein komisch erzählt Treichel von den psychischen Auswirkungen der Brudersuche, von den emotionalen Höhen und Tiefen und den subtilen Mechanismen, die die Eltern und auch der Sohn im Umgang mit dieser alle belastenden Situation entwickeln.
