Orient und Orientalismusrezeption bei Goethe und Heine sind ein geradezu klassischer Gegenstandsbereich der Germanistik. Hier wird zum ersten Mal ein Vergleich beider Autoren auf Grundlage der Thesen Edward Saids unternommen: Reprasentiert selbst lyrische Fiktion den Orient aus einem Gefuhl westlicher Uberlegenheit heraus als ein Objekt, das es zu dominieren gilt? Figuren, Bildfelder, Metaphern und Symbole wie die Gestalt des persischen Dichters Hafis, Rauscherfahrung durch Liebe, Alkoholgenuss oder dichterischen Wahnsinn sowie poetologische Konzeptionen Goethes wie Heines bilden jeweils den Einstieg zu einem Vergleich. Beide dichterischen Verfahren erweisen sich als zwei gegensatzliche Positionen der Fremdwahrnehmung: Goethe, der in seiner Ambivalenz zwischen Herrschaftsanspruch und pluralistischem Verstandnis darauf zielt, Analogien zwischen Orient und Okzident aufzuzeigen, kontrastiert mit der Absicht Heines, dubiose Klischees im Verweis auf Differenzen zu dekonstruieren. Beide Wahrnehmungs und Wirklichkeitsmodelle erweisen sich als typische Aneignungs und Enteignungsverfahren in der literarischen Darstellung orientalischer Kulturen.
