C'est d'elle que date la vritable naissance de l'Occident. pas d'unit de lieux ni de style, mais de multiples foyers de cration o se rencontrent paganisme et christianisme. Cette confrontation donne lieu un renouvellement de l'architecture, de la mosaque, de la fresque, de l'orfvrerie, et une cole de manuscrits riches et varis.
