Hartmann von Aue gilt als einer der bedeutendsten Epiker der mittelhochdeutschen Klassik um 1200. Doch obgleich viele seiner Verserzaehlungen sowie Minne und Kreuzlieder bis heute ueberliefert sind, ist seine Herkunft nahezu unbekannt. Der Historiker Ludwig Schmid hat sich auf die Suche nach moeglichen Quellen gemacht, die etwas ueber Hartmann von Aue erzaehlen koennten. Er versucht von Aues Stand und Familienzugehoerigkeit zu klaeren, wobei er den Leser auf seine Spurensuche mitnimmt, ihm seine Erfolgserlebnisse mitteilt und ihm aber auch Fehlschlaege nicht vorenthaelt. Sorgfaeltig bearbeiteter Nachdruck der Originalausgabe von 1874.
