Der Historiker Ludwig Schmid hat sich auf die Suche nach moeglichen Quellen gemacht, die etwas ueber Hartmann von Aue erzaehlen koennten. Er versucht von Aues Stand und Familienzugehoerigkeit zu klaeren, wobei er den Leser auf seine Spurensuche mitnimmt, ihm seine Erfolgserlebnisse mitteilt und ihm aber auch Fehlschlaege nicht vorenthaelt.
