El objetivo de este trabajo, es mostrar los determinantes que a nivel econmico definieron los flujos de inversin extranjera directa (LA IED) hacia la frontera norte de Mxico, a partir del inicio del periodo del Tratado de Libre Comercio de Amrica del Norte (EL TLCAN) hasta aos recientes; adoptndo el enfoque terico de Dussels, Dunning, Ozawa y Vernon. La metodologa empleada fue a travs de la estimacin economtrica de datos panel, en donde, los hallazgos principales fueron que, tanto la variable ndice de desarrollo humano como la variable ndice de especializacin manufacturera, no impactan a la inversin extranjera directa en el sentido que se esperaba, mientras que las variables: exportaciones de la industria maquiladora, tipo de cambio real y salarios reales si lo hacen de acorde con lo esperado. Despus de la revisin terica, y la aplicacin rigurosa de las pruebas economtricas, se concluye que las variables siguientes: exportaciones de la industria maquiladora, el tipo de cambio real y los salarios reales, fueron las ms importantes para determinar los flujos de inversin extranjera directa hacia la frontera norte de Mxico durante el perodo 1994 2008.
