Deutsche Industrieunternehmen sehen sich auf globalen Marlden einem zunehmenden Wettbewerb ausgesetzt. In diesem Zusammenhang kommt der japanischen Industrie eine besondere Bedeutung zu. In vielen Branchen ist es den japanischen Unternehmen gelungen, eine globale Spitzenposition zu Lasten der deutschen Wettbewerber zu besetzen. Die Ursachen des japanischen Erfolgs waren insbesondere in der jiingeren Vergangen heit wiederholt Gegenstand wissenschaftlicher Untersuchungen. Dabei wurde die japanische Wettbewerbsfahigkeit auf Managementkonzepte zurUckgeftihrt, die unter den Begriffen Lean Production und Lean Management auch in vie1en deutschen Industrieunternehmen eingefiihrt wurden. Die einfache Obertragung der japanischen Konzepte verursachte in deutschen Unternehmen jedoch oft erhebliche Friktionen. Griinde dafur sind in den Unterschieden bei den unternehmensexternen und internen Umfeldfaktoren der beiden Wirtschaftsnationen zu finden. 1m Rahmen der vorliegenden Arbeit wird fur die deutsche Industrie ein eigenstandiger Ansatz zur Verbesserung der internationalen Wettbewerbsposition entwickelt. Zunachst wird die Stellung der deutschen und die der japanischen Industrie auf den Weltmarkten bezogen auf ausgewahlte Schliisse1branchen beschrieben. Anschlief3end werden auf der Grundlage einer Darstellung der unternehmensexternen und internen Umfeldfaktoren die Rahmenbedingungen des Erfolgs japanischer Industrieunter nehmen untersucht. Aus den vorgestellten Umfe1dfaktoren werden Erfolgsfaktoren im internationalen Wettbewerb ausgewahlt, die die Basis fur die empirische Ermittlung eines StarkenlSchwachenProfils der deutschen im Vergleich zur japanischen Industrie bilden. Das StarkeniSchwachenProfil sowie weitergehende Auswertungen des empirisch erhobenen Datenmaterials werden fur die Entwicklung eines Gesamt konzepts strategischer Handlungsempfehlungen zur Verbesserung der Wettbewerbs position deutscher Unternehmen auf global en Markten verwendet.
