Das Hauptaugenmerk liegt dabei auf der Periode des Althochdeutschen. Diese lteste, schriftlich bezeugte Stufe der deutschen Sprache wird zunchst in Bezug auf inner und auersprachliche Kriterien nher charakterisiert, um eine Abgrenzung von vorhergehenden und nachfolgenden Etappen vorzunehmen. Im Anschluss daran steht die Syntax dieser Sprachstufe im Mittelpunkt der Betrachtung. Der Begriff "Syntax" kommt aus dem Griechischen ("syntaxis") und bedeutet soviel wie "Zusammenordnung" bzw. "Wortfgung". Auf die gesamte Bandbreite dieses Begriffs, sowie auf die verschiedenen Syntaxtheorien, kann und soll an dieser Stelle nicht eingegangen werden. Diese Arbeit beschrnkt sich auf die oberflchensyntaktische Sichtweise, d.h. auf die lineare Abfolge von sprachlichen Ausdrcken (Wrtern und Wortverbindungen) innerhalb des Satzes. Da fr die Strukturierung des Satzes in den meisten Sprachen die Stellung des finiten Verbs eine entscheidende Rolle spielt (vgl. DRSCHEID, 2000: 11f.), wird vor allem dieser Aspekt der althochdeutschen Syntax nher untersucht.
