About the Author Pedro Antonio Joaqun Melitn de Alarcn y Ariza (Guadix, Granada, 1833 Madrid, 1891) fue un narrador espaol y miembro destacado del movimiento realista. Abandon la carrera de derecho en la Universidad de Granada para dedicarse a la eclesistica, pero no le convenci y acab dedicndose al periodismo. Fund diarios como El Eco de Occidente o El ltigo, de carcter republicano y revolucionario. Entre sus obras destacan El final de Norma (1855), su primera obra, El hijo prdigo (1857), Diario de un testigo de la guerra de frica (1859), de su experiencia en la guerra de frica, El sombrero de tres picos (1874), El nio de la bola (1878), La Prdiga (1880), El Capitn Veneno (1881), entre otras. Fue consejero de estado con Alfonso XII en 1875 y acadmico de la Real Academia de la Lengua desde 1877.
