Le DAO est le premier dictionnaire onomasiologique de l ancien occitan. Il suit un classement par concepts (d apres le systeme conceptuel de HalligWartburg) du lexique de la France meridionale sur la base de textes s etalant des premiers documents jusqu au milieu du 16e siecle. Il reunit de maniere systematique, tant sur le plan lexical que morphologique, les moyens d expression de l ancien occitan correspondant a une notion donnee. Cle onomasiologique des deux grands dictionnaires de Raynouard et de Levy, il completera ces derniers par un grand nombre de references nouvelles acquises dans le cadre de recherches plus recentes. Cette approche onomasiologique, par la relation etablie entre les mots et les choses, considere et integre davantage la langue nonlitteraire jusqu ici quelque peu negligee. Le DAO est le premier dictionnaire qui tient compte de tous les idiomes du Midi de la en relevant la scripta occitane/gasconne, le latin medieval et le francais regional, il reflete integralement la situation linguistique plurilingue qui regnait au Moyen age dans le domaine occitan. Der DAO ist das erste nach Sachgruppen geordnete Worterbuch der altokzitanischen Sprache von den Anfangen ihrer Schriftlichkeit bis zur Mitte des 16. Jahrhunderts. Er bildet den onomasiologischen Schlussel zu den beiden grossen altokzitanischen Worterbuchern von Raynouard und Levy, deren Wortschatz durch die Erschliessung neuen Quellenmaterials in umfangreichem Masse erganzt und aktualisiert wird. Er zielt auf die Wiedergabe des gesamten Sprachsystems einer Epoche unter Berucksichtigung der mehrsprachigen Situation Sudfrankreichs erfasst der DAO zusatzlich die mittellateinischen und regionalfranzosischen Idiome und bietet somit die vollstandigste verfugbare Information zur gesamten linguistischen Situation im mittelalterlichen Sudfrankreich.
