Die Edition bietet eine Auswahl der privaten Korrespondenz der deutschbohmischen freiherrlichen Familie der Lexa von Aehrenthal. Den Ausgangspunkt bildet der Beginn des Auslandsstudiums der beiden alteren Sohne Felix und Alois im Herbst 1872, womit durch die kontinuierliche Abwesenheit mehrerer Kinder vom Elternhaus eine weitgehend durchgehende Korrespondenz gegeben ist. Den Abschluss bildet der Tod der Mutter Maria Aehrenthal im Herbst 1911. Die grosste Zahl von aufgenommenen Briefen stammt von Alois Aehrenthal, Diplomat und spaterer Aussenminister, dessen Briefe eine hervorragende Quelle zum Verstandnis der politischen und gesellschaftlichen Gedankenwelt dieses bedeutenden Vertreters der osterreichischungarischen Aussenpolitik bieten. Die Korrespondenz seiner Eltern und Geschwister erweitert und erganzt diese Aspekte um Einblicke in die Lebenswelt des bohmischen Adels im spaten 19. Jahrhundert, die Welt adeliger Offiziere, das Selbstverstandnis einer deutsch gepragten bohmischen Oberschicht und vieler weiterer Bereiche, jeweils gebrochen durch den gesellschaftlichen und wirtschaftlichen Wandel der Zeit.
