Auch wenn das Buch gemeinhin als erster deutschsprachiger Grostadtroman gilt, trifft diese Klassifizierung jedoch nur unzureichend die ursprngliche Intention des Autors und verfehlt auch das letztlich erreichte Ergebnis. Im Vordergrund steht nmlich die Entwicklungsgeschichte eines Einzelnen (Die Geschichte vom Franz Biberkopf, wie es im Untertitel heit) und nicht ein Tableau des Berlins der 20er Jahre. Dass Dblin trotz allem eine weitschweifige Milieuskizze des Berliner Lumpenproletariats' jener Zeit zeichnet, wie es Ronald Links in seinem marxistischen Deutungsansatz formuliert, soll nicht ber die zentrale Stellung Biberkopfs und die ihm vom Autor zugedachte Aufgabe als berzeitliche, exemplarische Figur hinwegtuschen. Auf der Frage nach der Bedeutung des grostdtischen Handlungsraumes fr den Roman und damit fr die Entwicklung Biberkopfs wird in dieser Arbeit der Schwerpunkt liegen. Uns wird dabei das geistigemotionale Wechselspiel zwischen dem Protagonisten und seinem unmittelbaren Umfeld interessieren. Ausgehend von einem soziologischen Ansatz des zwanzig Jahre vor Dblin geborenen Georg Simmel werden wir uns dem Lebensraum Grostadt nhern. Anschlieend wird die romantheoretische Konzeption Dblins errtert, um Beweggrnde seines literarisches Schaffens zu erkunden und die von ihm daraus abgeleiteten Mglichkeiten zur praktischen Umsetzung zu verstehen. Die theoretisch gewonnenen Erkenntnisse sollen schlielich Grundlage fr eine Analyse der Figur des Franz Biberkopf sein, wovon wir uns weitgehenden Aufschluss ber den Aussagegehalt des Romans er
