Sie nimmt ca. 28 Prozent der Landmasse Afrikas ein und ist mit einer Flche von 8,56 Millionen km2, einem Gebiet von annhernd der Gre der Vereinigten Staaten, die grte Trockenwste der Erde. Die heutige Groe Wste' von den Arabern EsSahra' die Gelbe' (Landschaft) oder auch wste Ebene' genannt durchzieht Nordafrika in seiner gesamten Breite. Sie erstreckt sich ber 6000 Kilometer vom Atlantik zum Roten Meer mit einer NordSdAusdehnung von annhernd 2000 Kilometern. Zu groen Teilen handelt es sich um Plateauflchen und weite, flache Becken; im Inneren wird diese Beckenlandschaft durchzogen von einer nordwestsdost ausgerichteten Gruppe von Hochgebirgen mit Gipfelhhen von mehr als 3000m. Sand, Fels und Kieswsten prgen das Bild des saharischen Raumes. Eine gewisse Gleichfrmigkeit wird durch das stetige Wstenklima hervorgerufen. Je nach Lage und Umweltfaktoren, wie beispielsweise dem greren maritimen Einfluss in der Westsahara, der Hhenlage oder auch einem hheren oder niedrigeren Grundwasserstand, zeigt auch die Flora und Fauna und somit die Oberflchenbeschaffenheit deutliche Unterschiede. Aufbau und Struktur des Groraumes sind uerst vielfltig, und klimatische und landschaftliche Extreme sind kennzeichnend fr die grte zusammenhngende Trockenregion der Erde. Dieses riesige, vielfach unterteilte Gebiet ist kaum mehr einfach als eine Landschaft' zu bezeichnen, sondern wird zutreffender als Saharischer Subkontinent' aufgefasst.
