Ob nun Fernseher, Radio, Buch, CDPlayer, MP3Spieler, oder einfach nur Zettel und Stift, Medien begleiten uns im Alltag. Doch Medien, die uns zuweilen alsselbstverstndlich, manchmal sogar unbedenklich erscheinen, hatten nicht schon immer einen positiven Stellenwert in der Gesellschaft. Es scheint eine Art Faustregel zu geben, dass zunchst jedes neue Medium als negativ bewertet und von Kulturdeftisten angegriffen wird. Seit einiger Zeit ist ein neues Medium auf den Markt getreten, dass politische, psychologische und pdagogische Diskussionen aufheizt: Computerspiele. Gewalt in Computerspielen gilt als zunehmend gefhrlich, da diese zur Nachahmung anregen sollen. Seit einiger Zeit verstrkt sich die These, dass das Gewaltverhalten von Jugendlichen unter anderem auf gewaltverherrlichende Spiele zurck zu fhren ist. Auch ist noch nicht geklrt, ob diese bald auf dem deutschen Markt ganz verboten werden sollen. Es soll gezeigt werden, dass solche Rckschlsse zu einfach gestrickt sind. Vielmehr spielen noch weitere Faktoren eine groe Rolle. Zunchst wird in dieser Arbeit die historische Dimension von Mediengewalt betrachtet, um den Diskurs zeitlich einordnen zu knnen. Um die Thematik besser zu verstehen, muss im Anschluss geklrt werden, was Gewalt nun eigentlich bedeutet, da dieser Begriff in vielfltiger Weise benutzt wird. Die Frage, ob Computerspiele Gewalt verursachen, ist, so will es die Arbeit aufzeigen, falsch gestellt. Vielmehr sollte sie heien, ob diese gewaltttiges Handeln frdern oder zum Ausbruch bringen knnen.
