Andererseits wird diese Tatsache durch zahlreiche Statistiken belegt: Aktuellen Statistiken zufolge stellen mittelstndische Unternehmen 99,8 % der Unternehmen dar, ttigen 59,5 % der Umstze, beschftigen 70,2 % aller Arbeitnehmer, bilden 81,9 % aller Auszubildenden aus, erzielen 64,2 % der Bruttowertschpfung und fhren 51,5 % der Bruttoinvestitionen durch. Diese Zahlen zeigen somit, welch wichtige Bedeutung mittelstndische Unternehmen fr die deutsche Gesamtwirtschaft besitzen. Die Ursachen fr die schwache Eigenkapitalausstattung des Mittelstands sind vielfltig. Whrend auf der einen Seite die unterdurchschnittliche Ertragslage der Mittelstndler und die hufig zu hohen Privatentnahmen der Unternehmensinhaber beklagt werden, haben auf der anderen Seiten lange Zeit zahlreiche Grnde insbesondere fr die Aufnahme von Fremdkapital gesprochen. Vor allem die vergleichsweise gnstigeren Fremdkapitalzinsen sowie dessen steuerliche Abzugsfhigkeit machen das Fremdkapital aus Sicht der mittelstndischen Unternehmen zu einem attraktiven Finanzierungsmittel. Der Bankkredit ist somit traditionell die tragende Sule der Mittelstandsfinanzierung, so dass lange Zeit eine Strkung der Eigenkapitalbasis bei den mittelstndischen Unternehmen nicht im Vordergrund stand.
