Mit der GERMANIA SACRA werden Handbcher zur Geschichte der alten deutschen Reichskirche (bis 1803/6 ) geschaffen. Das gesamte verfgbare gedruckte und ungedruckte Quellenmaterial sowie die Literatur der deutschen Bistmer, Domkapitel, Kollegiat und Pfarrkirchen, Klster und sonstigen kirchlichen Institutionen wird hier aufgearbeitet. Die Gliederung erfolgt nach den Bistmern und Erzbistmern. Die Handbcher sind im wesentlichen einheitlich angelegt und enthalten folgende Kapitel: 1. Quellen, Literatur und Denkmler, 2. Archiv und Bibliothek, 3. Historische bersicht, 4. Verfassung, 5. Religises und geistiges Leben, 6. Besitz, 7. Personallisten. Die enge Verbindung von Kirche und Welt im Mittelalter und in der frhen Neuzeit und die Tatsache, dass die schriftlichen Quellen bis zum Sptmittelalter fast ausschlielich aus geistlicher Hand kommen, machen die GERMANIA SACRA zur Grundlage der Kirchengeschichte, der politischen Reichs und Landesgeschichte und der Wirtschafts und Bildungsgeschichte. Mit dem Abschluss von Band 37, 4: Das Bistum Mnster, Die Dizese liegt erstmals die komplette Beschreibung einer Dizese (Mnster) von ihrer Grndung bis zu ihrer Aufhebung in der Skularisation 1803 vor.
