An allen Lebensstationen der Flucht und Wanderjahre ist die 'Kerntruppe der Aufklrung' aktiv: in Stuttgart, wo Schillers Lieblingslehrer Abel Chef der Ordensfiliale wird, in der Pfalz, wo Schiller auf fhrende Matadore des Bundes trifft, in SachsenWeimar, wo unter der Regie Johann Joachim Christoph Bodes der inzwischen verbotene Orden in reformierter Gestalt weiterlebt. Zu Gesicht kommt ein dichtes Beziehungsnetz von Ordensmitgliedern, eine Vielzahl von Begegnungen, Werbungsversuchen, Verbindungen. In unmittelbarer Nhe zu den Protagonisten erlebt Schiller so Aufstieg und Fall des Illuminatenbundes. Die Folgen fr den Komplex des 'Don Karlos' werden hier zum erstenmal umfassend dargelegt. Das Beispiel der Illuminaten sorgt fr die Umorientierung des Sujets, die neue Fhrungsrolle des Marquis Posa, die Philosophie der Menschenrechte aber auch fr den Absturz ihres Verfechters in einen 'Despotismus der Aufklrung', den die 'Briefe ber Don Karlos' denkwrdig schroff an den Pranger stellen. In der Debatte um die Illuminaten formieren sich Positionen, die Schiller angesichts der Franzsischen Revolution aufnehmen wird. Die illuminatische Herausforderung begegnet ihm erneut, als der Prinz von Augustenburg und dessen Vertrauter Jens Baggesen an ihn herantreten. Die Auswirkungen sind in den Entwrfen der sthetischen Erziehung und des sthetischen Staates greifbar.
